Dear Marty,
Congratulations on your election to the honor of Generalissimo. I know you will do an excellent job for the community and the area. I do have a question about the name "Neewollah" and the symbol of the "witch." I do some amateur painting and some ceramics. I like to go to various sales, including the Neewollah arts and crafts show, and sell some of my merchandise. Can I display the name Neewollah and the witch on my artwork to sell?
Artist
Dear Artist,
Neewollah, years ago, applied for and was granted trademarks, for both the name "Neewollah" and the "Neewollah witch." This was done for the protection of the celebration and all those involved in it. As a result, they can be used by local merchants for advertisement or for promotions. Generally, our trademarks protect us from these two items being used on objects being sold by businesses or individuals. This also restricts their use on any other activity not sanctioned by the Neewollah Board of Directors.
I hope you realize this is only to maintain the integrity of the organization and for the protection of the celebration. You can imagine the number of unscrupulous individuals who would latch on to these trade marked items and use them in ways not in the family spirit of Neewollah.
Neewollah Inc. appreciates your asking this question. By doing so, you have assisted Neewollah in informing the public of how the Neewollah name and witch can be used.
Sincerely,
Marty Reichenberger
