Food Stands or Bust

Or maybe we should call it "Busting at the Food Stands".  We all have our favorite place to eat at Neewollah.  It might be a corn dog or some apple fritters or maybe a funnel cake.  I've heard stories of kids (anywhere from 5 years old to 70 years old) planning their route.  Others of us start at the top on the west side and don't stop until we have made it back up the hill on the east side.  For me,  I always grab a corn-on-the-cob as I head home from an evening of fun but I never make it past the trash can sitting in front of the Chamber office.  I know because my cob gets thrown into it every time.  I'm always tempted to head back for another and then I remember, there is another night.

Enough of me...  It's your turn.   Tell us your Food Stand Story.

Gary and I have been coming back for Neewollah since 1995 We enjoy all the food, fun and visiting friends. This year we aren't going to be able to make it. Am watching the webcam, the setting up of the bandstand and am getting very sad that we won't be there. Maybe next year. Have a great time and have a bite of all the good food for us.Until next year. HAVE A WONDERFUL NEEWOLLAH. A special hi to9163 to Allene and Bill.

Last year (2007) was the first year that I got to experience Neewollah. My son who was 2(turned 3 in November) dressed as Shek for his costume for the kiddie parade. I remember after that we ate like Shek does by going and getting a turkey leg. All my son has been talking about as it approaches this year and we now live in Indy is going to get a turkey leg.

My two sisters and I,along with our families have been coming to Neewollah since 1994. My oldest sister and I were born in Independence.1994 was the first time that we ever heard of Neewollah. We came to Independence for our mothers funeral during the time that Neewollah was going on. We had such a great time that we have been coming back yearly.

When I was in elementary school, I got sick a lot. The day that the stands opened, I was really craving a delicious cinnamon roll, and I asked my mother to take me home (because I had a tummy ache) at lunch. The real reason was that I knew she was headed downtown. When we got there I ate some nachos and I got my cinnamon roll. Unfourtunatly, my mother decided I wasn't sick and that I had to go back to school. Bummer!

My husband and I met during Neewollah week in 1977 and were married during the same week in 1980. Our "reception" consisted of the two of us going downtown to the food stands! My favorite at that time was Jaffles and his was the barbecue stand that used to be in front of First National Bank. Now it is Gyros and turkey legs. Does anyone remember Reverand Russaw's pig ear sandwiches?

I'm pretty serious about diet and exercise -- fruits, veggies always. Vitamins. Go light on meat. Ease up on desserts. But the year I discovered the gooey hot chocolatey ecstasy of DEEP-FRIED OREOS at the food stand on the north end of Penn, my good habits were gone and forgotten...until Sunday when Neewollah was over, the stands were gone and I had to return to real life (which was probably a good thing).
