Once again, for 21 years in a row, we will be starting the first full day of Neewollah Celebration with the USA Track & Field Certified 5K and 10K Run . Yes, that is right, the 10K run is certified this year.
What better way is there to kick off Neewollah than an early morning run through the beautiful Riverside Park.
As the runners are finishing up, the youth with parents, and folks that just want to take the early 1 Mile Fun Run / Walk will be getting ready.
The chili cook-off participations will be putting the great smell of some of the best chili around into the air.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact me and have a great day.

Information on the
USA Track & Field Certified 5K Run
USA Track & Field Certified 10K Run
1Mile Fun Run/Walk
Neewollah will kick-off the first Saturday, October 23rd, with the 22nd USA Track & Field Certified 5K Run, and the first USA Track & Field Certified 10K Run. What better way to kick off the Neewollah season and the first full day of active but with an early run through the beautiful Riverside Park. The 5K will once again start on the East side of the oval and work its way through Riverside Park before heading North on 5th Street to the Northern edge of Independence, then the runners will turn around and come back South entering the Southern edge of the zoo, then back into the park to the finish on the Northwest side of the oval. The USA Track & Field Certified 10K Run will start on the Northwest side of the oval near the finish for both races, but the 10K runners will make one lap around the oval, and then follow the 5K route out. 10K runners will run the 5K course as above until they reach the East side of the oval where they will be directed to their right onto the One Way that will take them through the Zoo with them exiting out onto 5th Street then turning North to the edge of Independence once again. Then hitting the turnaround point then back South on 5th Street back to the South end of the Zoo, then into the park as they follow the course to the finish line on the Northwest side of Oval. By this time the smell of great chili should be in the air, and the oval should be lined with future runners that are just starting out with the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk.
The 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk will be sponsored once again by Mercy Health for Life. This is a 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk that is free for those that would like to be part of the opening full day of Neewollah 2010. The course will start at the Northwest corner of the oval where the 5K/10K finishes and will finish in the same place. This race will start between 9:45am and 10:00am which should be shortly after the finish of the 5K/10K races. We ask that you come out early to do your check in then, stay watch and cheer the 5K/10K runners at the start and finish as they will be there to cheer you on. Again this year Mercy Health for Life will be making this a competition between Independence schools, and as more information on this becomes available it will be posted.

2009 recap
The morning started out cold as we went through registration / check-in time in the park. But when the race started we had a clear sky with the sun shining and temperatures warming up. We started with 141 runners that were registered in both the 5k and the 10K. With the 10k being new this year with a course that the runners were not sure about we had 23 total runners in it. The 5K ended up with 101 runners. There were some runners that we knew would not make it as the good old flu bug either got them or a family member. But overall still had a great turn out for the day. The 10k was within the number that I was hoping to get for a first time. After the race talking with some of the runners from both races all the comments were positive and the ones that I talked with had no problems with 10k course. Still looking for feedback from the runners on both races so that this can be used for improvements on the next year. The only small problem was with computer equipment in finishing up the races and this was a little delay in giving out the awards.
To all that ran a big thank you. To all that helped with all the runs (5k, 10k and 1Mile) a very big thank you as it doesnt work without each of you.
A note to any of the runners that dont have their medal I will get them in the mail to you this week.
Thanks and enjoy the next week of Neewollah 2009!
