Dear Generalissimo:
My father is a life long resident of Independence and has enjoyed the huge Saturday parade. Several years ago he moved to assisted living facilities and has not attended the parade since then. Each year he watched it on television, though. The other night he told his grandsons he would really like to go to the parade, to see the floats, the Queen candidates, smell the food, hear the bands and see the antique cars. We want to make this happen. Is there a way he can watch the parade from the car?
Thank you, Dan Hunte
Dear Dan,
First of all thank you for the letter and I want to let people know Cable One will again televise the parades. Thank you Cable One! Yes, there is a way for your father to watch the parade very comfortably. With the cooperation of the Independence Police Department, we have a designated handicapped section. It is on Maple street, between Sixth and Ninth, generally between the First United Methodist Church and Potts/Schmidt Funeral Home. However, you will need to go to the police station in the basement of city hall to get an official handicapped parking permit. They are available now. In fact, if you are set up to watch the parade in this area and don’t have a handicap pass, you may be asked to move if needed. It is our goal for everyone to have a “Thoroughly Fun” time at the Grand Parade.
