Merchandise Chairs

Neewollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon has announced the 2026 Neewollah Merchandise Chairs: Anne Bertie, Michelle Hawkins, and Molly Reynolds. The Merchandise Chairs work closely with vendors to select, design, and order a variety of Neewollah merchandise for the entire family. Their efforts ensure Neewollah Headquarters is stocked with festive items and memorable keepsakes for everyone to enjoy!

Anne Bertie is a lifelong Independence resident and works as the Controller at Hugo’s Industrial Supply. Anne is also a dedicated community volunteer and lifelong lover of Neewollah. Anne’s involvement with Neewollah began with the Kiddie Parades during her childhood. She was a Neelah Deb in 1988 and a Queen Neelah candidate in 1990. Over the years, she has served on numerous Neewollah committees and volunteered in a variety of roles, including Queen’s Director, Chili Cook-Off, Ticket Queens, Headquarters, and Professional Show. Her favorite Neewollah experience was serving nine years on the Neewollah Board of Directors, including seven years in leadership roles as Treasurer, Vice Chair, Chairman of the Board, and Generalissimo in 2019. Anne says that Neewollah runs in their family’s blood and they look forward to the festival each year!

Michelle Hawkins is a lifelong Neewollah fan and a native of Independence. After living in Missouri for 26 years, Michelle and her husband returned home two and a half years ago. Now retired, Michelle stays active in the community through St. Andrew Church and as a substitute teacher at St. Andrew Catholic School. Neewollah has been part of Michelle’s life since childhood. She and her siblings participated in the Kiddie Parade each year, even earning a ribbon for Best Costume. The Grand Parade and Queen Neelah remain two of her favorite Neewollah traditions. Michelle began volunteering with Neewollah in 2025 as a Candidate Co-Chair. She has since helped with ticket sales and this year’s Summer Workshop. Although she is just getting started with her volunteer involvement, Michelle looks forward to continuing to serve Neewollah and the Independence community for many years to come.

Aside from her years away for college and dental school, Molly Reynolds has spent her life in Independence. A dentist at Reynolds Family Dentistry, Molly has been part of Neewollah for as long as she can remember, and the festival holds a special place in her heart. Over the years, Molly has been involved in Neewollah in a variety of roles, serving on numerous Queen’s committees including Queen’s Director, Candidate Co-Chair, Pop Party, Talent, Pre-Parade Breakfast, Coffee and Conversations, and Walk-In. She also stepped onto the Neewollah stage for the first time last year as part of the cast of Annie. While she loves every part of Neewollah, one of Molly’s favorite traditions is the Kiddie Parade. She enjoys carrying on the tradition her sister, Yona, started by creating a themed float with the kids each year. Molly currently serves on the Neewollah Board and is grateful for the opportunity to continue being part of a celebration that has been a tradition in her life from the very beginning.

The Merchandise Chairs are inviting children and teens to get creative with a Sticker Design Contest. The contest is open to two age categories: Pre-K through 5th grade and 6th through 12th grade. Entries must feature original designs, and one winner will be selected from each age category. Winning designs may be used by Neewollah on stickers and other promotional materials. Stickers featuring the winning designs will be available for purchase at Neewollah Headquarters and other approved locations. Lead Roles for Frozen: The Broadway Musical

Generalissimo Cody Dixon and Director Lisa Paige are excited to announce the five lead roles for this year’s musical production, Frozen: The Broadway Musical. Taking the stage at Memorial Hall will be Payton Sanders as Anna, Evangeline Blackert as Elsa, Bradley Gray as Kristoff, Daniel McDill as Olaf, and Matthew Wright as Hans. Each of the five performers brings extensive stage experience to this year’s production, with all having previous connections to Neewollah and its musical productions.

Payton Sanders is a graduate of Labette County High School and is entering her second year studying theatre at Independence Community College. She also serves as president of ICC’s theatre sorority, Delta Psi Omega, where she helps organize events and community service projects. Her stage credits include Ocean in Ride the Cyclone, Ross in Macbeth, Gabriella in High School Musical 2, Katherine Howard in SIX: Teen Edition, Middle Anna and Snow Chorus in Frozen Jr., Customer in She Loves Me, Wendy Jo understudy in Footloose, and Star to Be, Wacky and Adult Chorus in last year’s Neewollah production of Annie. This year, she returns to the Neewollah stage as Anna in Frozen: The Broadway Musical. In her free time, she enjoys sewing, discovering new movies, and spending time with her family and dogs.

Evangeline “Lena” Blackert earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Missouri Southern State University and continues to pursue her passion for theatre and music while balancing her full-time career. She has been involved in musical theatre since childhood, beginning with church cantatas. Her Neewollah credits include Violet Beauregarde in Willy Wonka, Mersister in The Little Mermaid, Adult Chorus in Mary Poppins, Morticia Addams in The Addams Family, and Cecille in Annie. Her collegiate credits include Fantine in Les Misérables, April in Company, and Pinky in Happy Days. This year, Lena takes on the role of Elsa in Frozen: The Broadway Musical. Outside of theatre, she enjoys performing at special events, modeling, creative writing, and discussing literature and film.

Bradley Gray is a zookeeper at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence and enjoys acting, singing, and just about anything that involves animals. A familiar face on the Neewollah stage, his Neewollah credits include Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Henry and a Guard in The Wizard of Oz, Shrek in Shrek the Musical, Gomez Addams in The Addams Family, Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid, and Drake in Honk!. He has also served as assistant music director for Annie and Elf and worked on stage crew for Peter Pan and Mary Poppins. His other stage experience includes Javert in Les Misérables, Mr. Mayor in Seussical, and various roles in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Bradley has also been a co-host and soloist for Vaude in the Ville in 2025 and 2026, along with working backstage, in the sound booth, and in stage management for various children’s plays and musicals. This year, Bradley takes on the role of Kristoff in Frozen: The Broadway Musical. He also sings lead for The Missourians and enjoys hiking, fishing, and spending time around a campfire.

Daniel McDill serves as Career Pathways Advisor for ICC Rural Outreach Education and is a strong advocate for the arts and community involvement throughout Southeast Kansas. His Neewollah experience includes Oliver Warbucks in Annie and a Barbershop Quartet member in The Music Man. This year, he takes on the role of Olaf in Frozen: The Broadway Musical. His other stage credits include the Tinman in The Wizard of Oz, Narrator in Aladdin Jr., Oliver Warbucks in Annie Jr., Horton in Seussical, and Charlie Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.Beyond performing, Daniel stays involved in a variety of community organizations and activities. He serves on the Independence Children's Summer Theatre Board and the Independence Housing Authority Board of Directors, is a member of the Neewollah Bandstand Committee and First Presbyterian Church Choir, and serves as drumline coach for both Independence High School and Independence Community College.

Matthew Wright, a 2025 graduate of Labette County High School, is continuing his theatre studies at Independence Community College on a theatre scholarship. His Neewollah experience includes Lt. Ward and Judge Brandies in last year’s production of Annie. His other stage credits include Macbeth in Macbeth, Mischa Bachinski in Ride the Cyclone, Troy Bolton in High School Musical 2: On Stage, Hans in Frozen Jr., and Mr. Maraczek in She Loves Me. This year, Matthew takes on the role of Hans in Frozen: The Broadway Musical. Away from theatre, he enjoys writing and working out.

2026 Neewollah Headquarters Chairs:

Neewollah Generalissimo Announces Headquarters Chairs Neewollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon has announced the 2026 Neewollah Headquarters Chairs: Amanda Hoover, Jenny Mitchell, and Melissa Small. The Headquarters Chairs oversee the setup and operation of Neewollah Headquarters throughout the festival, as well as its teardown at the conclusion of the celebration. They also coordinate, train, and schedule volunteers and handle the many details necessary to keep Headquarters running smoothly.

Amanda Hoover is a lifelong Independence resident. She is a registered nurse and works part time at Null Chiropractic. Neewollah has been part of her life for as long as she can remember, and her favorite part of the celebration is seeing friends, families, and former residents return to Independence year after year to celebrate the community they love. Amanda's involvement with Neewollah spans decades. She was a Neelah Deb in 1999 and a Queen Candidate in 2001. She has performed in several Neewollah musicals as a chorus member, and has volunteered her time assisting with Queen's Tea, Neewollah Headquarters, and the Cast Party. She currently serves on the Neewollah Board of Directors and has been selected as the 2027 Generalissimo.

Jenny Mitchell has called Independence home for the past 13 years and is a dedicated community volunteer. She and her family have enjoyed attending Neewollah festivities since 2014, and she especially loves seeing the festival come together through the dedication of its many volunteers. One of her favorite parts of serving at Neewollah Headquarters is welcoming visitors back to Independence, hearing stories from past Neewollahs, and watching the tradition be shared across multiple generations of families. Previously, Jenny has served as Queen's Publicity Chair, Neewollah Headquarters Co-Chair, and she’s served on the Yard Decorating Committee. She is grateful to be part of an event that brings the community together and celebrates the traditions that make Neewollah so special.

Melissa Small is an active community member and deeply involved in Neewollah. Her Neewollah involvement started in 1989 when she was selected as a Neelah Deb. She participated in Queen Neelah in 1991, earning Miss Personality. She was the founder of the Chili Cook Off and has served countless years in a variety of roles including Sponsorship, Queen’s Director, Emcee, and Generalissimo. She was honored to be Grand Marshal for the Grand Parade during Denise Hines’ year as Generalissimo and is now a lifetime Honorary Neewollah Board Member. When asked about her favorite part of Neewollah, Melissa said she enjoys seeing the community come together throughout Neewollah week. She appreciates the laughter, reunions between friends, and excitement on children’s faces, all of which reflect the community spirit that makes Neewollah a special tradition in Independence.

Co-Chairs This year’s Neewollah Fun Run/Walk

Neewollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon Announces Neewollah Fun Run/Walk Co-Chairs This year’s Neewollah Fun Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, October 24th following the 5k/10k races. This year’s co-chairs are Dalice Coda, Amanda King, and Jordan McIntosh.

Dalice Coda is originally from Independence and has lived in Claremore, Oklahoma, for the past two and a half years. She currently serves as the Sports Director for Bartlesville Youth Baseball and Softball. Neewollah has been part of Dalice’s life for as long as she can remember. Growing up, she participated in Queen Neelah as a Neelah Deb and later as a Queen Neelah candidate, where she was named First Runner-Up. She has also volunteered on the Queen’s Tea committee. One of Dalice’s favorite Neewollah memories is watching Queen Neelah each year with her mom and Papa Pete, a tradition she now enjoys continuing with her own daughter.

Amanda King has lived in Independence for five years. She is the Youth Coordinator at the Independence Public Library, where she enjoys working with local children and families. Amanda’s favorite parts of Neewollah are the 5K, Fun Run and Chili Cook-Off. Her volunteer involvement includes serving on the Queen’s Tea and Little Princesses committees, giving her the opportunity to be part of the festival’s special traditions in a different capacity.

Jordan McIntosh has called Independence home nearly her entire life and is a proud stay-at-home mom to her four children. Neewollah has always been a special part of Jordan’s life. She has pictures from the Kiddie Parade from before she could even walk and has been involved in multiple Neewollah musicals throughout the years and was a Neelah Deb in 2012. She has also made it a tradition to participate in the Neewollah 5K. Now, she enjoys making new Neewollah memories with her family and sharing the excitement of the festival with them. When asked about her favorite part of Neewollah, Jordan says it’s impossible to pick just one. She loves the entire week and all the traditions, events and memories that make Neewollah so special. The Fun Run/Walk will be held on the morning of Saturday, October 24th following the 5k/10k races. Stage Escort Co-Chairs

Neewollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon Announces Stage Escort Co-Chairs

Joe and Haley Barker are serving at this year’s Stage Escort Co-Chairs.

Joe and Haley Barker are both Independence natives, so Neewollah has been part of their lives for as long as they can remember. Joe’s Neewollah memories go back to junior high, with the Grand Parade being his favorite tradition. Haley’s memories stretch even further, from making downtown window decorations and dancing on the bandstand to participating in the Queen Neelah Pageant. She says she loves all things Neewollah! Joe is a hospital pharmacist, while Haley serves as Assistant Principal at Jefferson School in Independence. Together, the Barkers have been involved in Neewollah in many ways. Joe has volunteered with the Grand Parade crew and served on the Queen’s Coronation Committee. Haley has volunteered with the Queen’s Talent Committee, served as Publicity Chair and Neelah Deb Co-Chair, worked on the Dessert Committee, and performed in The Wizard of Oz. With their deep roots in Neewollah and years of experience volunteering in a variety of roles, Joe and Haley are excited to continue their involvement this year as Stage Escort Co-Chairs.

The Stage Escorts are a dedicated group of senior boys who play an important behind-the-scenes role in the Queen Neelah experience. During practices, they ensure each candidate’s props are properly placed and ready for their talent performances. On Coronation Night, they escort the candidates during the walk-in and onto the stage. Beyond their responsibilities, the Stage Escorts provide encouragement and support to the Queen Neelah candidates throughout their journey. Their enthusiasm, dedication, and willingness to serve help create a memorable experience for everyone involved. The Stage Escorts are an essential part of Queen Neelah, and their hard work and support continue to make the pageant a cherished Neewollah tradition year after year.

Marching Band Festival Co-Chairs

Neewollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon Announces Matt Carter and Erin Shelton as Marching Band Festival Co-Chairs

Matt Carter and Erin Shelton will be co-chairing the 2026 Neewollah Marching Band Festival that will be held on the afternoon of October 31.

Matt Carter has lived in Independence for the past 10 years and has been connected to Neewollah since middle school, when his band traveled to Independence to participate in the Kiddie Parade. Today, Matt serves as Assistant Band Director at Independence Middle School and High School, making his connection to Neewollah’s marching band tradition especially meaningful. His favorite part of Neewollah is the Marching Band Festival, a tradition he enjoys being part of each year. Matt’s past Neewollah involvement includes serving as Orchestra Director for Shrek and, for the past six years, as co-chair of the Marching Festival Committee.

For the past 25 years, Independence has been home to Erin Shelton, who is beginning her 25th year as the 6–12 Head Band Director. Throughout her time in the community, Erin has come to love Neewollah and all the ways it brings people together to celebrate Independence. Some of Erin’s favorite Neewollah traditions are the many marching events, including the parades and Marching Festival, along with the food stands, carnival and Queen Neelah Talent Night. Erin and her students have been a familiar part of Neewollah for many years. Her middle and high school bands participate annually in the Kiddie Parade, Grand Parade and Marching Festival, while the high school band also performs on the Bandstand. Erin also enjoys making Neewollah memories with her family and watching her children enjoy and participate in their favorite parts of the festival. Erin’s involvement with Neewollah extends beyond the bandstand and parades. She has conducted four Neewollah musicals and has shared her musical talents as a pianist, percussionist, French horn player and drumset player in at least 15 productions.

Following the Grand Parade, the public is invited to Shulthis Stadium on Saturday, October 31, for Neewollah’s Annual Marching Band Festival at 1:30p.m. Admission is $5 per person.

Neewollah 5k/10k Co-Chairs

Neewollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon Announces Neewollah 5k/10k Co-Chairs Co-Chairs for this year’s Neewollah 5k/10k are Tabi Morrell and Angela Renfro.

Tabi Morrell has called Independence home for the past 15 years. Originally from Illinois, she moved to Independence after graduating from college. Tabi taught kindergarten at Eisenhower Elementary for eight years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. She now enjoys teaching a Mommy and Me Workout Class at Penn Avenue Fitness and working as a personal trainer. Neewollah has been part of Tabi’s life for years. Before becoming a volunteer, she participated in the Neewollah 5K/10K multiple times and loved seeing the community come together to cheer on the runners before enjoying the chili cook-off. She says, “It’s a fun way to kick off Neewollah week with a little friendly competition!” This year marks Tabi’s fourth year as co-chair of the Neewollah 5K/10K, and she is excited to continue helping make the event a fun tradition for the entire community.

Angela Renfro and her family moved to Independence in 2001, and Neewollah quickly became part of their lives. Some of her favorite traditions include the food stands, Grand Parade, musical, and band competition. Angela is the Principal of St. Andrew Catholic School and enjoys serving the Independence community through her work and Neewollah involvement. She has volunteered with Queen’s Window Display, Musical Props, the Kick-Off Party, Queen’s Scrapbook, and Kiddie Parade. After 25 years in Independence, Angela loves being part of the traditions that bring the community together each October.

This year’s Neewollah 5k/10k will be held on Saturday, October 24th. Registration opens online at www.neewollah.com September 1. Registration forms will be available at Neewollah Headquarters following Headquarters Opening Day. Participants must be registered by October 1 to receive a race t-shirt.

The Queen Neelah experience is about so much more than the moments on stage during Talent and Coronation. Each event is thoughtfully designed to build confidence, friendships, develop life ski ls, and create memories that last a lifetime. Behind every Queen Neelah tradition is a devoted committee of volunteers who pour their time, talent, and encouragement into making this experience special for each candidate. These committees are led by co-chairs that help create the moments that make Queen Neelah a cherished part of the Neewollah tradition, and Generalissimo Cody Dixon is proud to announce the dedicated co-chairs serving in these roles for 2026. he Summer Workshop, co-chaired by Elizabeth Goad and Megan Lawrence, gives potential candidates the opportunity to learn more about Queen Neelah, ask questions, and gain inspiration through a fashion show featuring ideas for pageant attire. Valerie Davis and Elisa Beshear, both mothers of past Queen Neelahs, will host Coffee and Conversation for parents and guardians, which provides valuable insight into the Queen Neelah experience, offering an opportunity to learn what to expect and ask questions.

The official kickoff of Queen Neelah begins with the Pop Party, co-chaired by Dee Dee O’Malley and Lisa Wilson. While not a judged event, this fun and encouraging afternoon allows candidates to gather together, learn about etiquette, and become familiar with the practices and expectations that wi l guide them throughout their Queen Neelah journey.

Several volunteers work behind the scenes to prepare the candidates for judged events. The Interview Workshop, led by Shanda Chambers and Shelley Schultz, will provide candidates with a valuable opportunity to sit one-on-one with mock judges and showcase their ability to communicate, think on their feet, and confidently share who they are. The Runway Workshop, led by Jodi Hayse, will help candidates prepare for their runway appearance during Coronation by focusing on confidence, posture, and graceful presentation.

Walk-In is a special Coronation tradition where candidates arrive at the front steps of Memorial Hal in their beautiful evening gowns and are escorted into the building. Gregg and Sandy Webster wi l host a Walk-In Workshop to teach candidates how to carry themselves with poise and elegance, while also helping Stage Escorts and candidate dates learn proper escorting techniques. Logan Taylor and Haley Marchant will coordinate transportation for Coronation Walk-In, ensuring each candidate has the opportunity to arrive at Memorial Hal in style for this memorable and highly anticipated evening.

The Queen’s Tea, co-chaired by Morgan Baxter and Emily Clubine, will be the first judged event and wi l give candidates the opportunity to meet the judges, participate in small-group conversations, and demonstrate poise, confidence, and conversational ski ls. The Queen’s Brunch, co-chaired by Ashley Bemo and Breezy LaForge, wi l give candidates another chance to interact with judges as they continue to practice their communication and interpersonal ski ls that are a valuable part of the Queen Neelah process.

The Queen Neelah judges are an important part of the experience, and Abby Emert and Beth Kelly will serve as Judges Co-Chairs. They will welcome the judges to Independence, help coordinate their schedules, and escort them to events. As part of their time in Independence, the judges will attend a Judges Dinner that will be hosted by Bryan Emert and Simon Heckman.

Following Coronation, candidates, Neelah Debs, escorts, and their dates will attend the Coronation Bal. This memorable tradition will be coordinated by Aubree Odell and Shayla Schaper. Before riding in the Grand Parade on Saturday morning, they will gather for the Pre-Parade Breakfast, co-chaired by Kayla Schabel and Cassie Rutland, for one final opportunity to celebrate the friendships and memories made throughout their Queen Neelah journey.

The Neewollah Stage Escorts, co-chaired by Joe and Haley Barker, play an important role in supporting the Queen candidates. These senior boys will assist candidates throughout practices and Talent Night by helping move sets and props and later escort candidates on stage during Coronation. The Escorts Etiquette and Interview Workshop, led by Sam Blackard and Dan Reynolds, wi l help escorts develop confidence, professionalism, and valuable ski ls while preparing for their role.

A beloved Neewolah tradition is the Queen Neelah Window Display at Neewolah Headquarters. Featuring the beautiful headshots of each candidate, and photos of the Neelah Debs and Stage Escorts, the display is creatively designed each year and enjoyed by the community throughout the weeks leading up to and during the festival. This year’s window display will be created by Lindsay McBride and Alicia Yates.

Additional volunteers contribute behind the scenes to ensure the Queen Neelah experience is captured and celebrated for years to come. Kirsten Byrd and Denise Hines coordinate the Data Workshop, helping gather important candidate information used throughout Talent and Coronation. Chandler Keley wi l create the Queen’s Scrapbook, a treasured keepsake for the newly crowned Queen Neelah. Nelie Mendoza will lead the Button Committee, capturing photos and creating buttons worn by family and friends as they proudly support their candidate, escort, or Neelah Deb.

Each of these traditions represents the heart of Queen Neelah, a community coming together to encourage young women, celebrate their accomplishments, and create memories that extend far beyond the pageant. The dedication of these volunteers ensures that every candidate’s Queen Neelah experience is fi led with support, growth, friendship, and moments they wi l cherish for years to come.

Generalissimo Cody Dixon and Director Lisa Paige are proud to announce Mark Gard as conductor for Frozen: The Broadway Musical. Mark has called Coffeyville home for the past 34 years, though he grew up in Newton, Kansas. He recently retired from USD 445 after serving as the vocal music teacher at Field Kindley High School and Roosevelt Middle School.

Neewollah has been part of Mark's life since 1995, when he appeared as Prez in The Pajama Game. Over the years, he has remained actively involved in Neewollah’s beloved musicals, portraying the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz (1997), serving as vocal director and playing Robertson Ay in Mary Poppins, performing keyboard in the pit orchestra for Annie. and now returning as conductor for this year's production of Frozen: The Broadway Musical.

Neewollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon has announced Joy Adkison and Hillary Sutherland as the 2026 Neelah Deb Co-Chairs and Rene Hines as the Neelah Deb Choreographer.

Joy Adkison grew up in Independence and has called Cherryvale home for the past two years. She is a 5th grade teacher at St. Andrew Catholic School. Having grown up in Independence, Neewollah has been a part of Joy’s life for as long as she can remember and remains her favorite time of the year. Some of her fondest childhood memories include walking downtown during the festivities, and she especially enjoyed sharing that experience with her class last year. While she loved Neewollah as a child, she now enjoys experiencing the festival in new ways as an adult. This year marks Joy’s first time serving on a Neewollah committee, and she is excited for the opportunity to be involved and help continue the traditions that make the festival so special.

For the past 17 years, Hillary Sutherland has called Independence home. She is a PreK-3 teacher at St. Andrew Catholic School. Neewollah has become a cherished family tradition, and spending Wednesday evening at the carnival with her family each year is one of her favorite parts of the celebration. Hillary has been involved with Neewollah in many roles over the years, including serving as Queen Director, Candidate Co-Chair, Escort Co-Chair, Judges Co-Chair, Brunch Co-Chair, Coronation Ball Co-Chair, and Pre-Parade Breakfast Co-Chair.

Rene Hines has called Independence home for the past 38 years. She is the owner and dance instructor at R&S Studios, where she has shared her passion for dance with generations of students. Neewollah has been an important part of Rene’s life, and she loves how the celebration brings people to the community while creating opportunities for families and friends to come together. Her past Neewollah involvement includes serving as choreographer for the Neelah Debs many times, as well as providing choreography for the Neewollah musical productions of Mame, Damn Yankees, Brigadoon, Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat and Honk.

There will be three opportunities to watch the 2026 Neelah Debs perform: during both the Queen’s Talent and Queen’s Coronation, as well as one evening at the bandstand during the festival. The Neelah Debs play an important role in creating lasting Queen Neelah memories by serving as encouragers and supporters throughout the candidates' Queen Neelah journey.

2026 Queen Coronation Co-Chairs

Neewollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon has named Heather Estes and Jaicey Gillum as the 2026 Queen Coronation Co-Chairs.

Heather Estes has called Independence home for the past 26 years and has served the community as a childcare provider for the last 14 years. Neewollah has been a part of Heather’s life for as long as she can remember. Even before moving to Independence, her family made the annual trip to enjoy the festival, creating traditions centered around the Kiddie Parade and Grand Parade. Today, she continues those traditions with her own family and especially enjoys spending time together and making memories while watching the parades. Over the years, Heather has volunteered in several areas of Neewollah, including the Queen’s Talent Committee, ticket sales, Queen’s Brunch, and Queen’s Tea. She has cherished the opportunity to serve and has made many wonderful memories through each of these experiences.

Jaicey Gillum grew up in Neodesha and has enjoyed calling Independence home for the past six years with her husband and two children. She loves being part of a community that values family, traditions, and coming together to support one another, and she is thankful to be raising her children here. Neewollah has been a part of Jaicey’s life for as long as she can remember. From Kiddie Parades and musicals to riding the Tilt-A-Whirl, Neewollah has always been one of her favorite traditions. Today, her favorite part is seeing the excitement of the celebration through her children’s eyes. Jaicey has been involved with the Queen Neelah Summer Workshop, Queen Neelah Interview Workshop, Ticket Queens, and served on the Professional Show Committee. She is excited to co-chair Coronation and help make this special Neewollah experience one that the candidates will always remember.

Queen Neelah Directors Mindy Blackard and Lauren Ysusi would like to remind all girls planning to participate in the Queen Neelah Pageant that Packet Turn-in will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, at 2800 Regency Drive. All Queen Neelah packets must be submitted by this time in order to be eligible to participate in the pageant. Neewollah 2026 Sponsorship Committee

Newollah Generalissimo Cody Dixon has named Abby Emert, Karin Stoner, and Gavin Webster as the three members of the Neewollah 2026 Sponsorship Committee.

Abby Emert has called Independence home for the past 24 years and serves as the Executive Director of the Community Foundation for Independence. Since moving to the community in 2002, Neewollah has been an important part of her life. She especially enjoys her involvement with Queen Neelah, where she finds it rewarding to watch participants grow in confidence and shine on stage after their hard work. Abby has served in various Queen’s roles the past nine years, including two years as Queen’s Director, and also contributed to the Fun Run. She is currently serving her second year on the Neewollah Board.

Karin Stoner has proudly called Southeast Kansas home for nearly three decades, living between Independence and Neodesha for the past 29 years. She works as the Branch Manager at Commercial Bank in Independence. Since moving to the area in 1997, Karin has been a supporter of Neewollah. She especially values the festival’s wide appeal, offering something for everyone, from the opening night of the musical to the excitement of the carnival. Karin has contributed her time and talents as a Ticket Queen, served on various Queens committees, supported sponsorship efforts, worked in the Box Office, and currently holds a role on the Neewollah Board.

Gavin Webster is a lifelong resident of Independence and a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones. Neewollah has been a part of his life since childhood, with favorite traditions including the Medallion Hunt, the musical, and the chance to connect with the community. Over the years, Gavin has been actively involved in the festival, from participating in musicals as a child to serving as Co-Chair of the DooDah Parade, Food Vendors, and Sponsorship multiple times. He currently serves on the Neewollah board.

Frozen: The Broadway Musical Music

Frozen: The Broadway Musical Music Director and Conductor Director Lisa Paige announced Theresa Fischer as the Music Director for Frozen: The Broadway Musical.

Theresa Fischer has called Fredonia home for the past 16 years and currently serves as the 7–12 Vocal Music and Theatre Director for USD 484. Neewollah has been an important part of her life for the past nine years. Theresa's previous Neewollah involvement includes serving as Music Director for The Addams Family, Shrek, and Elf. She also served as Music and Orchestra Director for The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and Annie. In addition, she has appeared on the Neewollah stage as a cast member in Beauty and the Beast and was cast in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Auditions for Frozen: The Broadway Musical will be held June 30, July 1, and July 8 at Memorial Hall. Individuals interested in auditioning or serving on a production committee are encouraged to complete the audition form that can be found on Neewollah’s Facebook page or at www.neewollah.com. A variety of opportunities are available for performers. Adult roles are open to high school students and adults and include both singing and non-singing roles, as well as chorus positions. One or two roles will require performers to manipulate puppets as part of the production. The show will also feature a small children's ensemble portraying the Hidden Folk Chorus. Auditions for this group are open to students who have completed second grade through middle school. In addition, there are two girls' roles available for performers ages 8–12.

Queen Neelah Candidate Co-Chairs Announced

Queen Neelah Candidate Co-Chairs Announced Queen Neelah Directors Mindy Blackard and Lauren Ysusi are excited to announce Cori Hall and Mersadies Landrum as the 2026 Queen Neelah Candidate Co-Chairs.

Cori Hall has called Independence home for the past 16 years and serves the community as a school-based Physical Therapist. Neewollah has been part of Cori’s life for many years, beginning with childhood memories of attending the Grand Parade and later marching in the parade during high school. After moving to Independence, she quickly discovered that Neewollah offers so much more than the beloved parade tradition. While she enjoys the many exciting events the festival brings to the community, the nostalgia and spirit of the Grand Parade continue to hold a special place in her heart. Cori has been actively involved in Neewollah through several volunteer roles over the years. She has served twice as the Pop Party Etiquette Speaker, was a member of the Queens Brunch Committee in 2022, co-chaired the Pop Party in 2023, and was honored to co-chair Coronation in 2024.

Mersadies Landrum proudly calls Independence home. After growing up in Independence, she returned in 2021 to raise her family in the community she has always loved. Mersadies is currently a stay-at-home mom who enjoys being actively involved in local traditions and events. Neewollah has been part of Mersadies’ life for as long as she can remember. One of her favorite parts of the celebration is Saturday. While it is bittersweet because it marks the final day of festivities, the Grand Parade is always a highlight. She especially loves seeing people from all over come together to celebrate and enjoy the spirit of Neewollah. In 2007, she was honored to be a Queen Neelah candidate, and for the past two years, she has proudly served as co-chair for Headquarters.

There will be a Summer Workshop for girls that are going to be seniors during the 2026-2027 school year, that are interested in participating in Queen Neelah. The workshop will be held Sunday, June 7, at 4:00 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene Family Life Center at 3835 CR 3900 in Independence.
